Star parties and astronomy events offer unique opportunities to learn, observe, and connect with the community—whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or just beginning to explore the night sky. From local gatherings to major regional festivals, these events provide access to expert guidance, large telescopes, and some of the best views the universe has to offer.
🌌 Notable Annual Star Parties (USA)
Prude Ranch, Fort Davis, Texas
Held each spring in the dark skies of West Texas, TSP is one of the most iconic star parties in the country. It features observing fields, speakers, workshops, and some of the darkest skies in the continental U.S.
Black Mesa, Oklahoma Panhandle
This autumn event draws amateur astronomers from all over the region for its pristine skies and relaxed, community feel. Located near the border with New Mexico and Colorado, it offers excellent visibility and a strong sense of community.
Ochoco National Forest, Central Oregon
Hosted each summer, this party combines high desert skies, educational programs, and a rustic camping experience. It’s ideal for families and imagers alike.
Florida Keys, Florida
Held in February, WSP offers a unique beachside stargazing experience with warm weather and clear winter skies. One of the only major star parties in a tropical climate.
Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania
One of the premier observing sites on the East Coast, Cherry Springs hosts multiple events yearly under some of the darkest skies in the region. Organized by the Astronomical Society of Harrisburg.
Springfield, Vermont
A legendary event known for its telescope-making culture, Stellafane is the birthplace of the amateur telescope movement. The convention includes optics judging, historical talks, and observing from the Green Mountains.
Rocky Mountain Star Stare (RMSS)
Franklin Mountains, Colorado
A popular Colorado event with a stunning natural setting. RMSS features a supportive community of observers and a full schedule of workshops and observing time.
South Rim & North Rim, Arizona
Co-hosted by the National Park Service and the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, this free public event brings scopes and educators to the Grand Canyon each June. A fantastic combination of public outreach and observing.
Socorro, New Mexico
This multi-day New Mexico event offers observing at multiple sites, access to the Etscorn Observatory, and daytime tours to the Very Large Array (VLA). It’s a unique blend of dark skies and educational opportunities.
Very Large Array, near Magdalena, New Mexico
Held at one of the most iconic radio observatories in the world, this annual event combines optical stargazing with daytime science presentations and radio astronomy demonstrations.
El Valle, New Mexico
A small regional star party held under extremely dark northern New Mexico skies. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, it’s a great option for local observers or those seeking a more intimate setting.
